How is Quantum Computing Advantageous?

The hype on quantum computing is very real, one can see the so called “developments” or some crass comments on the idea of quantum computing. So much that so that it shows up a few times a week atleast. How much of the hype is real and how much is not is a story which is long and something I am not going into. What I am indeed interested in is why are so many people interested in it.

My Linux Desktop Configuration

One of the perks of using Linux is the freedom I get to tweak around and customize the user interface to my liking. Initially, I started with Unity then shifted to KDE, which is very customizable when I finally took up a tiling window manager without looking back. This article describes the setup I use and how you can replicate it. I am working on Arch Linux, but the same applies on any other distro with just minor changes.

Intro to Numerical Computation with Molecular Dynamics

All the problems that we solved until our undergraduation involved balls falling freely in gravity, boxes sliding down an inclined plane or two monkeys hanging on a pulley. We know that all such problems have a solution, only if we were as creative to come up with a way out. What about a slightly complicated problem? For example, we want to understand the flow of fluid through a complex set of pipes or the evolution of a gas in a nano cavity.

Intro to Special Theory of Relativity

It has been a wonderful year, 1905, for Einstein who just published four papers in Physics. But, one of them on the Special Theory of Relativity rocked the foundations of our understanding of nature. Before jumping onto the postulates of the theory, we will look at the Maxwell’s equations for electromagnetic waves and derive the velocity of light(as given in the Wikipedia). The Maxwell’s equations are as follows in the ‘Heaviside’ form of Maxwell’s equations where the fields are in free space without any charges or currents.

An approach to Quantum Mechanics

A very good way to learn something new is to start with a blank slate. But, how many of the concepts that we learned need to be discarded to embrace Quantum Mechanics? Quantum mehacnics is known to be daunting to many students across the disciplines. One of the difficulties I faced was to accept the postulates of the theory as they are. I asked, why or how can that be true?

Explaining the Third Postulate

The last postulate, as mentioned in the previous post, deserves its own post and here it is. Using the first three postulates, the mathematical framework is built which is required for the mechanics in quantum world. But, they do not give any clue as to what the operators would be corresponding to the classical dynamical variables observed using the Newton’s laws. And why is this necessary? We look for a new theory or a correction to the existing theories when the results of the experiments performed do not conform to the latter.
